OK, we are all so very weary of the pandemic. Call it covid, covid-19, coronavirus, SARS-COV-2, Corona, Rona. We’re all looking forward to the day that it is in our collective rear view mirror.
But while the plague’s persisting, we are continually hearing news stories of it… conversing about it… writing through it. I wonder how many times our situation has been described, over the past year, as “unprecedented.”
Which begs a question… What are some good potential alternatives to the term Unprecedented?
Yes, I Googled. This is what turned up in the results, from Oxford Languages…
First, a definition: Never done or known before. Yep, got it.
Next, some synonym-isms:
- unparalleled
- unequaled
- unmatched
- unrivaled
- extraordinary
- uncommon
- out of the ordinary
- unusual
- exceptional
- abnormal
- singular
- unique (oh, I certainly hope so)
- anomalous
- atypical
- untypical
- freakish (yes)
- unknown
- novel
- one of a kind (yep)
- unexampled
So, there you have it. I’ll make an effort to remember to use one of these alternate synonymous suggestions, the next time I speak or write of our unprecedented unparalleled circumstances.
